Info on New Ferry at Saturday Market

On Saturday, Aug. 7th you can get details of everything-you-want-to-know-about-the-new-ferry-and-more-than-anybody’s-thought-to-ask!

Whatcom County, through Public Works, will have an information booth at the Lummi Island Saturday Market at 2106 S. Nugent.

All residents—full-time and summer-only—property owners, and weekend visitors will see drawings and informational displays and receive handouts.

Two important features of the booth:

  1. A letter to sign and send to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg in support of a federal grant application that will help fund construction of the boat.

  2. Suggest names for the new ferry.

The replacement of the stalwart Whatcom Chief vessel is expected to take place in about five years.

“In the last few years we have worked with the island community to understand what they would like in their next ferry,” Senior Ferry Master Rich Hudson said in announcing the info booth. “And we engaged an engineering firm to draw up plans for the new boat.”

He stated that the consultants addressed the County Council level of service requirements, crew needs, and Coast Guard and other regulatory requirements. “People can come to our informational booth on Aug. 7th  to learn about the work that’s been done so far and find out what they can do to help,” Hudson concluded. Representatives of Public Works and members of the Lummi Island Ferry Advisory Committee (LIFAC) will be on hand to answer questions and distribute informational materials.
