Planning Grant Awarded

Planning Grant Awarded

The Lummi Island Community Association (LICA) has been awarded a FEASIBILITY STUDY Grant from Washington State’s Recreation and Conservation Office

LICA will use the $103,450 reimbursement grant over the next 18 months to conduct a FEASIBILITY STUDY. This will include public involvement, many meetings, and development of preliminary site plans with conceptual designs. Initial cost estimates for construction of a public pier and dock on Lummi Island will be outlined for public discussion.

** This grant does NOT provide any funding to build a dock. **

Currently, there is no public recreational dock on the island. A public dock would give users safer access to the water for fishing, crabbing, boating, and nature viewing. This would be especially helpful for those challenged by limited mobility The dock could also provide an option for people using private boats to reach the mainland during ferry outages.

One site being considered is Whatcom County‘s Lummi Island Beach Access, across from Beach Store Café (the site of the original ferry dock). Other potential sites will be analyzed as part of the feasibility study.
