July 11th 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the Whatcom Chief Ferry going into regular service after the Gooseberry Point pier was completed so the ferry could begin to serve us all

We at the Lummi Island Community Association (LICA) think that should be celebrated So, we are spearheading a celebration!

READY TO SAIL
The motor vessel Whatcom Chief was turned over to Whatcom County Friday evening as T. J. Larsen of the T. T. Larsen Steel Co announced the 100·foot, 70·gross tonnage vessel was ready to go.  The Coast Guard also gave its approval the same day and crew, the County Commissioners, and others who had worked on the ship took a cruise of the San Juans on a shakedown journey Saturday and found her to be a sturdy craft.  The ferry will be on regular runs as soon as the slip at Gooseberry Point is completed in a week or 10 days.  The ferry will be open to public inspection from noon to 3 p.m, today at Squalicum Boat Haven and from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m, at the Lummi ferry slip.
