Property Owners Must Maintain Driveway Culverts

Every year during the winter rainy season we get calls about water over roads and private property due to private culverts under driveways. Homeowners are responsible for private driveway culverts and their maintenance. It’s a good idea to clear out private culverts and prepare them now for winter rains. Regulations on these requirements are covered in Whatcom County Development Standards Chapter 2-Section 205(C)(1), specifically: “…[driveway culvert] owners are…responsible for…maintenance, and repair of their…[driveway culverts].”
