Spring Roadside Cleanup & Citizen Science

Saturday April 10th
 Save the date!

This years LICA Roadside Cleanup is from Noon to 4pm  –  in conjunction with the Heritage Trust and Island Library celebration of Citizen Science Month.

    • The Heritage Trust will be having a Citizen Science virtual event the same day at 10am.
    • Visit the Island Library to see their curated collection of Citizen Science Books.

For the first time in over 50 years the LICA Spring Roadside Cleanup did not happen in 2020 due to the pandemic. This year, COVID restrictions have loosened enough to allow small teams to venture outdoors in household or COVID bubbles while continuing to follow current COVID safety guidelines. Instead of gathering at the Grange for pastries and coffee, signing up for a route, loading into trucks, picking up trash and coming back for hot dogs and chili, LICA has come up with a special Roadside Clean Up 2021 Style.

For 2021 all of the paved roads and areas on the island have been divided into 24 segments of approximately of 1 mile or less.  We are now taking online signups to insure that all segments will be cleaned.  Click here to learn more and to sign-up !  If you wish to help with the Clean Up for a particular area that has a Team Leader already, please contact that Team Leader directly.  If you don’t know how to get in touch with them Mary & Carol can help you.

Questions? please contact:

Please Note:
Roadside Clean up volunteers will not have Truck Support for each team as in past years.  Volunteers will only be cleaning roadsides along the paved road and county right away.  LICA does not have person power or equipment to haul away heavy items from private property.  Please be kind to your neighborhood volunteers and not “salt the roadside” with things you need to take to the dump yourself.

To increase the impact of LICA’s roadside cleanup, Heritage Trust is doing a Citizen Science webinar where you can learn how to use the Clean Swell app to categorize and track what types of trash you find.. which tells us where the litter hotspots are on Lummi Island.

All you need to track is a smart phone or a GPS enabled tablet that you have preloaded with the Clean Swell app.  Directions for doing this can be found on the Heritage Trust website and at the Island Library.

No smartphone or GPS enabled tablet?  No worries!  The Island Library has you covered.  Stop in at the Island Library before you head out to pick up a paper data recording sheet.  Fill in the sheet as you pick up the litter.   When done, drop off the sheet at the Library and we will make sure your data is entered into the Lummi Island Clean Swell total count for the day.

In addition, the Island Library has put together a list of books available for check out to help Islanders of all ages to learn more about Citizen Science and cool projects that people just like you have been a part of
