The Lummi Island Historical Society and Island Library bring you a series of three programs on the subject of genealogy.
Come and get some great clues on how to get started on your family history, or if you're an old hand at this, get some inspiration and share your experiences. Learn about our new "Lummi Island Family Forest" under construction in a Family Tree Maker genealogy software program.
At this first session on September 13th, we will explore the library edition of Ancestry.com which you can use for free at your library. Jackie Marshall will take you through the steps on how to use the program. We will use examples of the available resources from established Lummi Island families.
The second session on October 11th will go beyond Ancestry.com and Jackie Marshall will take you on an exploration of other (mostly free) websites such as the LDS Family Search Family Tree. Keeping in mind that with genealogy the internet is only the tip of the iceberg, we'll also talk about off-line sources available locally, again using examples from Lummi Islanders.
The final session on November 14th (a Saturday) will be presented by library staff and will feature the Digitize-It Kit which is available to reserve from the library and includes a variety of library resources for scanning documents and photos, and ways to digitize video recordings from VHS, film and other bygone formats. The library has tools you can use to gather your stories into one, neat digital package to share with your loved ones and preserve for posterity. Join library staff to learn about the available equipment and the basics of how to use it.
Questions and discussion are encouraged at all sessions and refreshments will be provided.
