Blizzard Road was Blizzard Road for a long time, until Paul Davis checked with Jackie Gaines, whose Great grandparents were Leonidus and Sarah Blizard.
She confirmed that the single “Z” was correct. If you check the stones in the Lummi Island cemetery, you will find a discrepancy, so Jackie’s word is “written in stone” as you might say. I published Sarah “Sally” or incorrectly “Sallie Ann” ‘s poem in the Tome and the County Engineer, Ed Henkin I think, noticed the spelling difference with the single “z” and confirmed with Jackie that it is correct. So he had the road signs changed to the single “z:” – Blizard – which you see today.
Maybe one sign on the west end hasn’t been changed – I’m not sure. So the road is not named for the weather, but rather for a pair of our early pioneers.
