LICA’s 2022 Roadside Cleanup a Success

On April 2nd, Twenty-five teams of caring dedicated involved Lummi Island Community members gathered along the island roadways litter bags in hand and began cleaning their adopted mile long segments of road.  Sizes of teams varied, from Solo efforts to Families, to Friend/Neighbor groups, to large teams like the Volunteer Fire Dept. and the Willows Inn staff.  All totaled we had almost 120 people scouring the roadsides in neighborhoods, the library and ferry parking lots, the ferry orchard park, and even some of the community and private beaches in search of trash that might have ended up in the Salish Sea. 

About 79 people participated in the Heritage Trust’s optional Citizen Science Data Tracking Using the Clean Swell App   According to their reported data these teams had a total of 81.5 lbs of trash collected.  Feedback from almost all teams reported that in many places the roads were much cleaner than expected so keep up the ongoing good work Islanders!  Most of the teams did report their collections resulting in 555 items of trash thrown put into home trash containers for haul away and disposal.

The most common item found were pieces of plastic, food wrappers and cigarettes were runners up.
