VENDOVI ISLAND UPDATE – – Larry Roteman & ed

Our guest at next Wednesday’s (June 26) Potluck Dinner Meeting will be Tim Seifert, Executive Director of the San Juan Preservation Trust, who will share the story of protecting Vendovi Island (just south of Lummi Island) and making it available for public access. The Preservation Trust acquired Vendovi Island in 2010 with the tremendous assistance of a benefactor who provided a generous outright gift and a bridge loan that made the transaction possible. Since then, we have been discovering the rich natural treasures and fascinating cultural history of this largely undeveloped island in the shadow of Lummi, while simultaneously fundraising to pay off the loan. Cannibalism, old growth, rich tide pooling, homesteading, pristine beaches and diverse wildlife all play a role in this story!

These LICA meetings are open to everybody on Lummi Island. Potluck at 6:30 exactly and program starts at 7:15. We will have a short routine LICA Business Meeting following the presentation including the door prize of $60 for a Tome subscriber if s/he is in the Hall at the time of the drawing. Last month Patti & Gary Olson were not present to collect their $55.

$10 MONEY TEN MONEY $10 – – ed

We had no winner of last month’s $10 Certificate hidden in one copy of The Tome. The only rational explanation we can think of is that someone already had $10 and didn’t need any more money.

Each month we hide a Certificate redeemable for $10 cash in one copy of the Tome. Only Tome subscribers on Lummi Island are eligible for this cash bonanza.

community association philanthropy – – ed

At last month’s LICA Potluck Dinner Meeting the Lummi Islanders present voted unanimously to grant an additional $2,000 to FOIL’s library building renovation fund. This brings our total grants to FOIL this year to $4,000 for this project. It’s not enough – FOIL still needs more to pay for the entire project, but it is what we felt we could safely afford while retaining enough to pay for all Tome and other LICA expenses for the remainder of the year.

Lummi Island Congregational Church – – Cindy Bauleke, Pastor

Lummi Island is always beautiful, yet there is something about the sun shining and the lush greens of summer which cause us to stop in wonder and give thanks. We gather for a midsummer celebration around the labyrinth on June 21 at 8 PM in wonder and awe. Come join us for this evening or at 10:30 AM Sundays for more traditional worship with wonder and awe of its own. Thursdays the Church is open from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM for quiet meditation. Coming July 5 and 6 is the rummage sale; see Jane’s article for all the details.

You won’t want to miss this! A photographer will be taking pictures at the church July 12 and 13 for a new directory for the Church. They are happy to include other Islanders who might want a formal portrait. To make an appointment there is a link on the Church website (www.lummichurch.com) or call Rhayma (758-2060).

One of the highlights of our summer is Vacation Bible School. This year the theme is Renew, as we care for creation and put faith into action. Tuesday through Thursday, July 30 – Aug 1, 9:30 AM to 12:30 P.M. and Thursday evening 6 PM to 8 PM. All children (kindergarten through 6th grade) on the Island are welcome to join us for this free and fun adventure.

Elderberries continue through the summer on Wednesdays from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM with lunch at noon. All seniors are invited for the day or for lunch.

Parish Nurses are available by calling Dorothy Hanson (758-2482) to answer your questions or to borrow medical equipment.

Please use the path to Church Beach, the labyrinth, or the outdoor center on these summer days. Sharing them is our small way of thanking Islanders and guests for your generous support of the Church in so many ways.

No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.

Help a man when he is in trouble

and he will remember you when he is in trouble again.

Lummi Island Ferry Advisory Committee – – Mike McKenzie, Chairman

Each person attending is permitted to make comments during open public session on the agenda with a three-minute time limit.

We’ll always be best friends because you know too much.

CIVIC CLUB – – Tamia Sorensen

The Lummi Island Civic Club wishes to thank all those who participated in, and attended the Annual Plant Expo on May 18. Despite the rather soggy day, we had an impressive turnout, a lot of fun, and the event on the whole was extremely successful. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Library Renovation project and the Lummi Island Girl Scouts for their annual camping adventure in Canada.

In addition to these community contributions, The Civic Club has embarked on an ambitious project to spruce up the grounds around the Lummi Island Fire Station and across the street surrounding the station’s storage shed. This project will be undertaken in the next few weeks with the goal of completion before the Annual Fire Hall open house later this summer.

Meanwhile, this month we wound up the Civic Club season with a splendid mimosa brunch. Members participated in a gift swap while enjoying finger sandwiches, salads, fruits and desserts. The Lummi Island Civic Club does not meet during the summer but we look forward to meeting again on the Second Thursday each month starting on September 12, 2013. We warmly welcome all Island ladies to join us at the Congregational Church at 10 AM.

When everything’s coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST – July 6 – – Tamia Sorensen

The Lummi Island Grange would like to invite all Islanders, family and guests to our Annual Pancake Breakfast. The Lummi Island Pancake Breakfast is one of the oldest and most enduring annual traditions here on the Island. The event was first presented before World War II and has been sponsored by a number of different Island organizations, including the Lummi Island Community Association. This year, the event will be held on Saturday, July 6, from 8:30 to 10.30 AM at the Grange Hall. Beyond pancakes, the breakfast will include eggs, link sausages, juice and coffee. $6 for Adults and $3 for Children. We hope to see you all there and do come with an appetite!

Accept the fact that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue!

Grange news – – Tamia Sorensen

This month, the Lummi Island Grange voted to make a very generous contribution toward the Civic Club’s annual community project. This year, the Civic Club will be sprucing up the grounds around the Lummi Island Fire Station and across the street surrounding the station’s storage facility. Meanwhile, the Lummi Island Grange is preparing for our annual Pancake Breakfast. All Islanders and visitors are warmly welcome! This year the event will take place on Saturday, July 6 from 8.30 to10:30 AM. In addition to pancakes, we will be serving eggs, link sausages, juice and coffee. Meals are $6 for adults and $3 for children.

In August, the Grange will be awarding our first annual Citizen Award. Each year, we will be honoring an Island resident who has distinguished themselves through outstanding community service and generosity of spirit. This year’s winner will be announced in August – so please stay tuned!

The Grange wishes to welcome any and all to join our organization, or to attend as our guest. The Lummi Island Grange meets on the first Wednesday of every month. Coffee and refreshments from 6.30 to 7.00 PM and the one-hour meeting commences at 7.00 PM.

LUMMI ISLAND FIRE DEPARTMENT NEWS – – Duncan McLane, Fire Chief

Open House Sunday June 30, 10 AM to 2PM.

You may have noticed a few changes at the Fire Hall in preparation for the Open House; removal of planters and new gravel in front of the bays, and much needed pruning of the large plants. In addition, we added gravel across the street and removed a large area of blackberries near the road. The work was graciously funded by the Civic Club and the Grange with the gravel donated by Aggregates West.

A new part of this year’s Open House will be more information on how your tax dollars have been spent in the past and where we are heading in the future. We have been blessed to have your support to be able to provide the volunteers with the newest and practical apparatus. Grant funding has been a major factor in providing the volunteers with the tools to be safe and successful. Unfortunately all this equipment is useless without the volunteers to operate it. Your emergency response depends solely on volunteers, and our membership is in decline. We need healthy, honest, energetic residents with time available after family and work obligations. Our regular training will resume in September so please think seriously about joining over the next few months or if you are unable, spread the news to those who you think might be able too. Our new Secretary, Lisa Lish, is now a Notary and is normally at the Station Monday, Wednesday and Friday Mornings. It never hurts to call ahead 758-2411.

Please celebrate responsibly this Fourth of July; we would love to have another injury and fire free year.

My wild oats have turned into prunes and all-bran.

Bingo for the Library – – Nancy Swanson

FOIL would like to thank all of you who made the Bingo a huge success! The Beach School sixth graders did a fantastic job and raised over $650 for our library. Aaliyah Arvensis, Dylan Bernard, McKeahan Carlton, Elliott Dixon, Dylan Letchworth and Green Pomeroy, you rock! Thanks to Arria and Joe and Beach School for hosting the event. In addition, we would like to thank Dorothy Hanson for rallying the Civics Club ladies to bake cookies and the cookie bakers: Dorothy, Judy Weatherby and Helen Stocker. Special thanks to all who donated prizes: Beach Store Cafe, Boys and Girls Club, Bruja Botanicals, Sausburger Stand, Lynn Dee, Lindy Early-Rosen, Dorothy Hanson, Pat Hayes, Naomi Jarvie, Buffy Lapof, Lis Marshall, Meredith Moench, Shoshana Rosen, Mitzi Schireman, Lynn Schreiber. Nancy Swanson and Karly Tucker for backstage organization and Robin Richardson for stepping up to the plate and helping out. We couldn’t have done it without all of you.

If God wanted me to touch my toes, he’d have put them on my knees.

ISLAND CHAPEL – – Jerry McRorie

Island Chapel member and novelist Dr. David Jones has published Divine Immunity, a novel set on a small island much like Lummi Island. It deals with how islanders attempt to escape a pandemic by closing themselves off from the rest of the world. It can be purchased both in book form and electronic form from Amazon at Amazon.com.

Rates have been set for both junior high and high school summer camps. They will be $125 for the week. Those unable to attend for the week can participate for $25 per day. Camp includes transportation to and from the Island, all meals and activities as well as sheltered sleeping quarters. Campers need to bring their own bedding. Junior high camp is August 4-10 and senior high camp is August 11-18. All camps are on Barnes Island between Clark and Orcas Islands.

Family camp runs from July 29 through August 3. In case of rain, back up days are August 19-22. Come by your boat or contact Pastor Chris Immer (296-4963 or 758-2254) for transportation. A fee of $5 per round trip will be charged for fuel and boat maintenance. There is no other charge for family camping and families are expected to provide their own food and bedding. Covered sleeping accommodations are provided or you can bring your own tent.

You do not have to be a member or even an Island Chapel attender to participate in any camping activities.

The all-church picnic will be at the home of Wendell and Terry Terry at 2882 N. Nugent Road following church on July 21. Bring a dish for the potluck. The Terrys will provide hot dogs and hamburgers.

Bible study continues at the Terry home each Monday with soup or a salad at 6 PM, and study for both men and women starts at 6:45. The groups are currently completing the study of the Book of Isaiah. Call the Terrys at 758-7432 for more information.

Ladies Bible Study at Candy Jones’ home is taking a summer break and expects to resume in the fall.

It’s not hard to meet expenses…they’re everywhere.

FALL FESTIVAL AND PARADE – September 14 – – Pat Moye

The Grange is pleased to announced that we will have our second annual revival of the Fall Festival and Lummi Island Parade. It will be held on Saturday, September 14. The parade will start at 11 AM and will culminate at the Grange Hall around noon where there will be beer, music and food! Everyone on the Island is encouraged to participate, either as a spectator, in the parade or you can set up a booth for free and sell crafts, produce or just about anything legal. The famous Civic Club Marching Lawn Chair Ladies will participate for sure, and I have already been contacted by other folks with great ideas for their floats. Families, Island Organizations and individuals are encouraged to join the parade. If you are curious about last year’s parade you can view the video produced by Isaac Colgan at

More details about the parade and Fall Festival we be communicated later this summer, but if you have any questions please call Pat Moye at 510-7392.

BEACH SCHOOL BACCALAUREATE – – Laura Winds

This is the last of the series on the IB School before school starts and the program begins! A lot of research and collaborative Island hard work has been put into laying the foundation for this and there is much excitement in anticipation of our Beach School doors opening to this new Primary Years Program. As a board member of LIFE – “Lummi Island Foundation for Education” (the BSF), I share strongly in this excitement and want to take this opportunity to tell you why, in hopes that this might heighten your interest, involvement, and excitement, as well.

While I feel education beyond high school can be most valuable and important in adding to one’s growth and future possibilities, I don’t, at all, believe it is the sole, essential ingredient to one’s individual and/or our world’s well-being. So it wasn’t the “baccalaureate” part of the school that enticed me to become involved (in fact, if truth be known, I’d prefer to see the name change to a name that addresses the broader scope of education that it definitely offers rather than to just the academic focus).

When my daughter, Tess, was in school, I remember attending all the many, many parent-teacher conferences in which, over and over again, I heard the teachers speak glowingly of how my/our daughter shone in her quiet leadership and unrelenting kindness and care of her fellow students. I always went away feeling I had received the best reward and told Tess that my hearing about her kindness was the greatest gift to me, surpassing any academic particulars. For me, kindness is one of the very most important elements of which our dear world is in need. Knowing a child has this quality gave and gives me hope.

For well over 30+ years I have been a licensed counselor, working with individuals, couples, and families. While as a counselor, I am privileged to witness, up close and personal, the beauty of the human soul, I also, all too often, see what great cruelty, sadness, inequities, etc. most of us humans have undergone in our growing years and consequently what we often continue to recycle onward to others. And this, in great part, is why I feel excited by the Primary Years Program on our very own Lummi Island!

What gives me hope is a program that teaches and promotes kindness, questioning, critical and creative thinking, and cooperation building – all qualities from which we as individuals as well as our struggling world can deeply benefit.

My beautiful grandson, Bly, will be entering first grade at Beach School. This Island envelopes him with love and acceptance as they do all our wonderful Lummi Island children. It is a beautifully safe, protective environment in which to grow. It is my hope that Bly and his fellow peers will be confident and well-prepared to enter and meet the greater, outside world with tools to accept what is and to help the rest of the world be as welcoming and accepting of life as we have experienced from our Island community.

Here are only some of the many IB education highlights that give me such hope:

“The IB aspires to help schools develop well-rounded students with character who respond to challenges with optimism and an open mind, are confident in their own identities, make ethical decisions, join with others in celebrating our common humanity and are prepared to apply what they learn in real-world, complex and unpredictable situations.

IB learners strive to become inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. These attributes represent a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond intellectual development and academic success.

The most significant and distinctive feature of the IB Primary Years Program is the six trans-disciplinary themes:

  • Who we are
  • Where we are in place and time
  • How we express ourselves
  • How the world works
  • How we organize ourselves
  • Sharing the planet

By creating an environment where students make connections between what they are learning in the classroom and the world around them, we are creating global citizens who will be well prepared to take leading roles in the world.

Einstein said: “No problem can be solved by the same consciousness that created it.”

What excites me is that I see this as an opportunity that will offer our children, and all of us connected and involved participants, the possibility to continue to learn and grow and to become more conscious so that we can better solve our problems, be they personal, familial, community, global etc., and become better contributors to our individual and collective health and happiness. How good is that!

A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist

is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties.
