“ …..AND THE WI NN I NG BID IS ……”

This will be the familiar cry from Auctioneer Steve Luke this coming Saturday, May 27, as he brings his gavel down for the final bid .on donated Items and services at the Annual LICC Auction to be held at the Beach School. Donations thus far received range from personal services to beautifully crafted pieces of pottery and art, and a wide variety of cuisine dinners prepared by Island residents. Everyone is urged to make their donation to be auctioned off at this fund raising project which has been a social hit the past two years as well as a profitable fund raiser. You may contact Paul Davis at 758-2414 or Gerri Neuman at 758-2213/733-0120 with your donation or if you have any questions.

The Mexican theme potluck dinner will begin at 4:00 PM with punch and coffee provided, and the Auction will kick off at 6:30 PM. Bring your neighbor or friend and have a fun evening bidding and/or visiting! – – G. Neuman, Chairman

“WHATCOM CHIEF” DRYDOCK SCHEDULED

The last run of the(‘Whatcom Chief is scheduled for noon, June 4 and the Seawolf from Anacortes will then provide passenger service on the same schedule as the Chief until the return of the Chief. We are hopeful that the work on the Chief can be completed by June 9 but a more realistic time for its return is approximately June 14 or 15. We will keep the news media posted as to any update on this information. – – Ed Henken. W.C. Engineer

COUNTY RECEIVING BAD CHECKS

The County Engineering Department has received several bad checks for payment of ferry passage and purchase of ticket books. When a check is returned to us by the bank for any reason, we cannot reprocess the check through normal county operations. To reprocess the check requires us to hand deliver it to the Issuing bank which we simply cannot do.

Accordingly, we have established a list of individuals and firms from whom checks will not be accepted and the crew is not authorized to make any exceptions to the list. You will be added to the list If your check is returned unless the bank would notify us that the error was made on the part of the bank. Continued receipt of bad checks will I leave no choice but to require all ferry payments to be made on a cash basis, although we are very reluctant to take this harsh step and work a hardship on the many fine people who utilize the boat and cause no problems. – -Ed Henken, W.C. Engineer

UPDATE ON CABLEVISION

The last communication regarding cablevision for Lummi Island residents Indicated a strong interest to supply this service and an engineering study is presently being conducted to compile necessary data. It was hoped that enough information would have been collected by this date to present a full program at this month’s general ,meeting, but it will more than likely be sometime this summer before that stage is reached (may have to call a special meeting for this purpose if enough interest is evidenced.). A ,few Island residents attended last month’s meeting to relate their support for cablevision service, but more interest will have to be shown if we expect any type of investment by the perspective company. Should you have any questions or wish to work on the Investigative committee, contact Gerri Neuman at 758-2213.

VILLAGE POINT RADAR TOWER

I guess this is not as controversial an Issue as I had assumed it would be. There were maybe a dozen people at our meeting a couple weeks ago (did you see our posters advertising the meeting?).

Two Coast Guard officers and the civilian project engineer came up from Seattle· to present a 25-minute slide program and answer a few questions. After the meeting, the visitors and a small committee went to the Village Point site to discuss specific details. Because of many practical, technical and economic considerations — as well as an apparent lack of interest on the Island — we agreed to a design very close to the Coast Guard’s original plan. They did concede that the two small building’s at the base of the tower could probably be colored a neutral “Driftwood Grey” and partially hidden by a screen of some sort. We thought their proposed white plastic exterior was a bit gross.

You will be surprised — but I hope not alarmed — when you see the tower erected in a couple years. The tower will be 90 feet high with a rotating 25 foot celery dish (long narrow shape) radar antenna on top operating on a 3 centimeter wavelength and peak power of 90 KW or about 90 watts average power. Lower on the tower will be a fixed parabolic dish shooting a 5 watt beam on close to the same wave length to Seattle with all the radar information. – – Paul Davis

PRESCHOOLNEWS

Now that Spring has really decided to come, you may see preschoolers most anywhere! We had a wonderful tour of the Island Sproutworks. The children enjoyed it and were most excited about the .package of sprouts that they were given. Thank you again Art and Jenny These Island industries are great!

You may see us at the Beach School practicing for Fi e Id Day. We know all about relay races and can really run fast, jump, skip and hop too. We can do somersaults and some can stand on their heads. Thanks Patty, Jackie, Jim and all Beach Schoolers for letting us come to the School and use the gym.

We’ve had lots of fun seeing baby animals — goslings at the Reynolds’ and 10 puppies at Luke’s. (Anybody need an idea for a Father’s Day present …..how about a new puppy? Call Cathy Luke.

We had a good lesson in growth when we returned to Reynolds this Tuesday and saw that the goslings are almost as big as their mama and papa! Thanks Karen for having preschool at your home so that the Islanders could use the church basement to vote on the’ school bond Tuesday. We thank everyone concerned for letting us have our school in the basement.

There will be preschool during the summer. Please contact Karen Reynolds, Cathy Luke or. Joan Moye. – – Susie Tyler

STATUS OF NEW FERRY DOCK

The current down time of the new ferry dock was a result of problems with the brake mechanism. Due to the continued varied problems with the dock, the County has demanded that a third party consulting engineering firm be retained to, analyze the entire hydraulic mechanical-electrical system on the dock.

The firm of K.P.F.F. from Seattle has been retained for this purpose and two engineers from the firm made their initial field investigation on May 9. We will keep you informed as to the ‘outcome of the investigation and the attempt to provide more reliable operations to those traveling the County ferry system. – – Ed Henken, W.C. Engineer

FIRE DEPT. NEWS

During the period since the April Newsletter there have been two aid calls for illness on April 24th and 29th. In each case, the patient was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Bellingham. There have been no fire calls.

The Firemen and EMT’s have been having special study and practice sessions in learning the names and locations of all the Island roads.

On Saturday, May 13th, Auxiliary member’s and Firemen held a work party to complete the painting of the interior of the firehall. Many thanks to all who donned paint clothes, wielded rollers and brushes to get the job done and helped clean up the mess! It looks great! – – Jackie Gaines, Sec.

SANITARY SERVICE TO BE PROVIDED

The I s land Grange has kindly consented to once again have a Port-A-John placed on their property for Island visitors to use. This service was initially started last year as a joint venture between the Park Dept. and the Community Club. Delivery of the service should be sometime before the Memorial weekend – – G. Neuman

NEW DOCK PILING

The State Department of Fisheries has flatly denied our installation of the additional piling on the new dock facility any time before the 1st of July. The delay in processing our Corps of Engineers permit, resulting from the State Department of Ecology protesting our work, will delay the work even further.

It now looks like the earliest the additional piling can begin to be installed will be sometime in August. – – Ed Henken. W.C. Engineer

BEACH SCHOOL NEWS

Field Day … Friday» June 2, High Noon at Gus and Libba Johnson’s on Lane spit. Bring a dish, your own eating utensils and cup. Daring feats of skill, games and much dashing about for all!! (Rain means Monday, the 5th, but “It ain’t gonna rain!”)

WHAT’S GOING ON? At least 23 kids from very big (Mike Moye) to quite little (Jake

Moye) enjoyed SWIMMING together at the “Y” pool recently thanks to JEANNE FINNEY’S good planning. TEN RUNNERS (9 kids and 1 ‘teach’) ran the FIVE MILE NON-STOP race at WWU last weekend! There were plenty of cheering parents at the finish line! PAUL RITCHIE was so worried his first grader might give up that he got out and ran the last 1 1/2 miles with AARON, and PAUL nearly collapsed at the end! Those runners were AARON MILLER, DEREK JOHN, SON. ROB FINNEY, BRAD DRAFS (with a broken wrist yet!) BRISTOL POMEROY. KARl JOHNSON & JULIE HANSEN also ran from Lummi. So when you see those blue shirts with NORMAN BRIGHT ROAD RACE on-them flashing by, you, know you’re looking at a CHAMP RUNNER from BEACH! J1M HANRAHAN deserves lots of credit for really getting those kids in top shape, and JIM is now beginning to think of marathons! CAROLE HAMMOND and WILL ROEHL recently gave our school and island a lovely mounted barn owl. They had to go through keeping it in the freezer until they received permission from the U.S. Interior Dept. to have it stuffed! After lots of requests for info., patience, and money spent … we got the owl. Now we are studying owls and if you want to know why they are protected by law, ask a Beach Schooler .. even the kindergartners will tell you. Lots of visitors lately from all over ….. Bellingham Co-op, Mt. View, Kent, and Western. It is good to share ideas with others. Coming up soon are trips to the annual book sale at the Bellingham Public Library, the County Humane Society, a Mexican dinner. and we’ve been asked to give a choral concert at Mt. View! These kids really wear one out … RUNNING, SWIMMING, EATING, SINGING, READING……THEY CAN DO EVERYTHING!

ANYBODY GOT … a boat trailer .. lotsa muscles .. some time There are 3 telephone poles along S. Nugent that were given to us … but the tread on my tennie runners is thin and I can’t get enough traction to get them to the school yard alone. I’d help anyone who’d be willing and if we can find a few other warm bodies we won’t have to go through with the disc fuse operation later on … cal1 me at 758-2167 or 758-2366

MANY THANKS GO TO MANY I SLANDERS ONCE MORE … DR. LEROY & MARY FREEMAN recently gifted us with a pool table, a ping-pong accessory table, and an automated speed reading machine. Would you believe the kids wanted to use the speed reader first? .. LYNN BRANDSRUD & JULIE HANSEN gave us a bag of books .. we’re reading them! … GFRRI NEUMAN and the RAY O’BRINE’S have kept us -in used computer paper which PAUL DAVIS spends hours after school cutting to proper size and then tearing apart as he grinds his teeth away because the teachers keep dittoing away because the kids keep doing so much work … especially Math! It is a real savings to us all to reuse that paper and it sure teaches the kids to conserve too …..• DAVID McADAMS gave us a long length of nifty nylon rope which PAUL DAVIS changed into a swing for the jungle gym ….. and we finally found out WHO the mysterious HAWAIIAN was who mailed us the enormous issue of the Honolulu paper which celebrated Captain Cook’s discoveries with a huge anniversary publication …. EVELYN COOPER, of course .. shoulda guessed that sooner! PAUL D. also remodeled one of those long heavy brown tables recently … now we have two sturdy short ones . . EDITH .. you’d love them .. and you too MAC .. and you too DONNA! Last … surely not least … Please accept my thanks as your neighbor and also as a representative of the FERNDALE SCHOOLS for your support n getting out to vote in both recent levy and bond issues. You’ve kept a school here a good many years by hard steady work and I’m proud that support continues .. -.and as I go into my tenth year here it makes me feel that if I keep trying hard enough … I might become a real “Island school mar’m” after all! – – Patty Gregory
