Historical Note: Computers with Spell Checkers were not available in 1976. Gerri Neuman was a very skilled Editor, Typist, but she had to prepare these Newsletters on an unforgiving stencil with a typewriter. The re-editing of these Newsletters was done with great advantage in 2017 with a computer with spell checker and other wonders of modern editing by an unskilled Editor.

IMMEDIATE RETURN OF QUESTIONNAIRES IS ASKED

Land Use Questionnaires were mailed to all box holders on the Island on November 26 with the request that replies be placed in boxes for that purpose at the Islander or the Beach Store by Wednesday, December 1. If you have not already done so, you are encouraged to study this material and answer the questions.

Your replies are the first step toward making known to the County Commissioners and the Planning Commission the wishes of the Island residents so that we can have a voice in the future planning of land use on the Island.

If you have any questions, please call a member of the steering committee listed on the front page of the questionnaire. If needed, extra copies are available at the Kim Bush’s home (758‑2584).

Please help by bringing in your replies right away.

SPECIAL LEVY PASSED

As you probably all know, the special levy for purchasing an ambulance for Lummi Island passed. This made it possible to apply for a matching grant through the State Office of Emergency Services. The Fire Commissioners are hopeful that the funds can be obtained without undue delay. For an explanation of the levy and its purpose, please refer to the October issue of the Newsletter.

HERE AND THERE ON THE ISLAND

The “missing” cemetery gate reported in the last issue of the Newsletter has been located, making it possible to go ahead with the new fence for that section of the cemetery that has not been enclosed.

Friends of GEORGE BRINGOLF report that they have found him cheerful and in good spirits at the Bellingham Villa Care Nursing Home. He moved there the 22nd of November from the hospital where he had major surgery the middle of the month.

Jerry and Norma McDonald and family wish to thank all of their friends and relatives who helped to make their 25th Wedding Anniversary celebration such a grand affair. It was beyond any of their expectations and will never be forgotten.

Sixty‑two GRANGERS were at the family’s annual after-Thanksgiving potluck get-together held at the Grange Hall. Party planners, Donna and Jeanie Granger, and Irene McFarland kept the fun, games, singing and music going for the youngest, the oldest,, and all those in between.

BEACH SCHOOL NEWS

Everyone is invited to the Christmas program and party at the school Tuesday, December 21, 8:15 PM. Please bring cookies or cakes. If the party is as successful as the Halloween party, you’d best get there early for a seat!

Many parents and non-parents worked hard to assure the success of the Halloween party. The work party on Saturday, November 6, was a huge success also. The ditch was finished, a bang-board, backstop, and fence built, a bank landscaped, and a flower bed planted. Over 30 people worked and furnished machinery and expertise. It is the kind of thing that will keep our school alive. Thank you all so much.

It’s Christmas every month at Beach School! We’ve been receiving gifts of pictures, smoked fish, an instamatic camera, use of a microscope, a science unit on cells, and the Christian Science Monitor. Thank you everyone. See you at our program the 21st!

PRESCHOOLERS PREPARE FOR CHRISTMAS

The preschoolers are practicing Christmas songs for the Beach School Christmas party. They have quite a repertoire including a rousing version of “She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain”, which they call “Don’t Snore”.

We could use old toy cars and trucks, wooden puzzles, games, or building toys at the preschool. We meet in the church basement Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 9:30 – 11:45 AM, and we welcome visitors.

Any questions, comments, or contributions, please call Cathy Luke, 758‑2688.

EARLY CHRISTMAS MAIL DATES URGED

The Post Office Department has posted dates for mailing letters and packages to arrive at destinations in time for Christmas. These dates are earlier than in former years as it is anticipated that post offices will have a much greater volume to handle this year due to the strike which began September 15 in 14 states against one of the large private carriers.

Recommended final dates for mailing letters, December 10; parcels by surface mail, December 3; and parcels by airmail, December 21.

Our local post office is requesting that mail which is placed in the delivery boxes to be picked up by the carrier for mailing have the proper postage affixed. Due to the volume of Christmas mailing, he will not be able to purchase and affix stamps to mail for which money has been put in the box.
