LUMMI ISLAND COMMUNITY CLUB POTLUCK DINNER MEETING
Election of officers
Program: Lehr Miller will give discourse on practical ornamental horticulture (under protest)
Many of the island folk who feel that they should have been recognized by their peers in the past for having “supoib” entertainment talents apparently will get a chance to prove that belief at the upcoming Island “Pholliez”, tentatively scheduled for March 22nd. However, that date more or less depends upon how adept most of these suppressed musical and theatrical aspirants are at resurrecting their various performing abilities prior to that date. We know of some whose resurrected ability so far has only reached the enthusiastic stage, but I guess that’s about half the necessary requirements, anyway. Guess if one thinks they can, they probably can if given the time and the opportunity. It’s been this writer’s observation that a lot of people could accomplish considerably more in developing latent talents if they only believed in themselves enough to try ‑ so in line with that last statement, we herein insert the notice that the Community Club elections will be at this next meeting. However, in order to ensure a good attendance a suggested slate has already been nominated as of last meeting. Other nominations, however, will be accepted from the floor if anyone else can be talked into getting involved. Incidentally, since we now have the accepted bylaws and it states in there that only those people who have paid their dues are entitled to vote, guess we will have to abide by that provision this time. Personally, I have definite negative reservations about that restriction, but youse guys all passed it ‑ so dern it, guess you’ll have to ante up the pittance. After all, where else can you buy for two bucks the privilege of griping about the organization’s officialdom and the way they want to run things?
Jeanie Granger was the instigator and guiding light behind the talent show mentioned above, and she has had this idea for some time, knowing the varied capabilities of many islanders. It could be an ongoing thing of great interest if the islanders would just put aside their bashfulness and reticences and join in. It has the capability of being a real fun evening. Any proceeds derived will go towards a community betterment project, and in this instance it probably would be the Grange Hall.

Floyd Tuttle, the fire captain, is concerned about the fact that they have not had the residential reports from at least two thirds of the island residents. This location and descriptive information is most important to the local fire department because of the fact that all calls are now handled by a dispatcher in Bellingham who is not familiar with the island geography or its residents. So if you’re contemplating a fire and want the loca boys to help light up the scene, you had best get them told where you live and what you’ve got that they can safely burn or save as the case may be‑

C.H.U.R.C.H. B.U.L.L.E.T.I.N.
Church services and Sunday School have resumed at 10:30 AM every Sunday, after the winter recess.
On Tuesday, February 11th board members, Rev. Carl Calhoun and other interested persons met at 2 PM at Maurine Melcher’s home to decide on a program for Lent, the 40 days before Easter. The following message from Rev. Calhoun explains what program was adopted:
“The period of Lent we are looking forward to began February 12th and will be observed in two special ways. The Sunday sermons dealing with some basic concepts in the Christian faith will be followed by a half hour ‘talk back’ with discussion, questions ‑ and ‑ maybe ‑answers. Tuesday evenings at 7:30 PM there will be a series of Bible studies, a broad overview of the major ideas of the Bible and the way they changed and developed through the 1000 years in which the Bible was written. These Tuesday meetings will be held in homes instead of in the church.* Everyone is welcome and our various points of view will add to the interest of the discussion.”
*The first of these meetings was held Tuesday, February 18th at Dave and Jean Greeley’s. Tuesday, February 25th at 7:30 PM the meeting will be at Beth and Dick Hudson’s home. Everyone is welcome.
Faye Richardson has been elected by the board for a one year term. There are at present six board members: Dave Greeley, chairman; Lois Peterson, Elizabeth Gerritz, Edith Granger, Gladys Long and Faye Richardson.
If you have any questions about our island church, call a board member or Rev. Carl Calhoun in Bellingham.

INTERESTED IN QUILTING? Whatcom County Extension Service is having a session on quilting at Tillicum House in Ferndale on Tuesday, Marc h 4th from 10 AM to 3 PM, and Craft Club is changing its regular March 3rd Monday meeting to the 4th in order to join this session. Members or any interested islander may meet at the Grange Hall before the 9AM ferry and work out car pools. Take a sack lunch. Civic Club is making substantial donations to the fire department, Grange Hall building fund and the church from the proceeds of their cookbook sale. The club’s February meeting was at the home of Kay Niedhamer with Shirley Aiston co-hostess. For the program Nellena Purvis brought spring into the room with her demonstration of Japanese flower arrangement using tulips, daffodils, pussy willows and island evergreens. March meeting will be at Lois Peterson’s with Grace Miller co-hostess.

We understand that Charles Baker’s beauteous wife Ann is becoming a real topnotch ranch owner. Seems she has undertaken the many and varied chores with gusto and is doing many things ordinarily assumed by the male of the species. Charley better treat her tenderly cause these attractive willing types are darned hard to come by…… Last year’s island high school graduates are now engaged in the following activities: Joan Morse, Gail Bennett, Kay Gregory are attending Western Washington State College; Linda Spillman is at Washington State; and Dan Miller is enrolled at Hi‑Line Community College; Kirk Hawley has been learning how to be a merchant at Yeager’s, and so I presume combined with his tremendous interest in fishing it would kind of make him a merchant marine!

MEDIC REPORT:
The flu attacked an unusually large toll of islanders this past winter and some are still battling its effects. Guess Leo Gilfilen gets the prize for the most prolonged seige, and his wife Agnes, feeling somewhat poorly herself, is valiantly trying to keep things on an even keel ….. Helen Pabor underwent a bit of foot surgery called a seplastic implant to correct a maladjustment of some of the intricate biological machinery one has in that area. She says that in part she is becoming a synthetic woman. She has to wear a heavy plastic castlike boot for about six weeks, so I suppose that should give her something to kick about (pun my word) …… On Sunday last a young lady bike rider by the name of Laura Bennett from Gooseberry Pt. got herself and her bike entangled on the hill in front of Jack Miller’s, and the rescue vehicle under the control of Kirk Harriman and Kim Bush took her to the hospital. It was reported that she had a badly injured shoulder…. Understand Dave McAdams threw his shoulder out playing volleyball recently, but Manley Smith put it back in under the direction of McAdams who had had it happen before. Wonder, though, is that the deal where you put a foot on the guy’s throat and pull like mad? We understand that Kirk Hawley did the light fantastic or something on the ski slopes recently, and is now sporting a full leg cast – that’s one way to get plastered ‑ and at such a tender age too ‑ tsk! tsk! ….. Glad to report that Bruno Wolff is recovering very nicely after a foot operation, though he’ll have to carry around a cast for some time yet.

One of the Scenic Estates pioneers, Bill Clark, died this week after emergency heart surgery. Bill was the first caretaker on the Estates., and though he retired from that job several years ago, he had remained active in all kinds of community work from making his famous peanut brittle to joining volunteer work crews. Our sincerest sympathy to Muriel and her family. We, too, will miss him.

Since this writer was conned into putting on a program at the February meeting I have been trying to ask a few islanders what might be of interest in the horticultural field to them. Judging from their answers anything what I don’t know would be most appropriate. But being a stubborn growing boy I think I’ll try to present a smattering of general information anyway, some of which might even be useful ‑ but only as a sales gimmick, mind you.

WH0 AM I
I was born in the immediate area slightly more fifty summers ago. Spent 3 1/2‑ years in the interior of Alaska and then went through most of my grade school in Southern California. Came north again and graduated from the eighth grade at Beach School, then on to Bellingham High. After a short stretch at Washington State I worked in a machine shop in Los Angeles for two years and then back to Lummi Island. (If you can’t identi6y me, see next Newsletter.)

BEACH SCHOOL NEWS
Lummi Islanders again showed the Ferndale School District that we are grateful for and proud of our school on the Island in the recent levy voting. We voted 72.9 per cent in favor of the levy and on recent visits two school board members as well as our fine superintendent, Dr, Norris, all commented on their appreciation for the support that has always been given in so many ways in our community. March 11 at 7:30 is our next P.T.A. meeting and we will have two more board members present to talk with you about your school so please feel welcome whether you have or have never had children at Beach School, for it is truly your school anyway and in every way.
****Lots of fun was had at the Valentine’s Party and thanks go to Shirley Shanahan and lots of other mothers who took everything in hand. It was fun to see Ron and Jo Spillman, Mr Lloyd Davis, Chris Gerholds and anyone else the kids could grab to help with last minute ruffles on the cards going home to Moms!
The Box Social was different in lots of ways this time. First of all there were twice as many men as women! I guess they know where they can get a good meal. However …. not as many meals were there as at our past two gatherings so they passed out “bidding cards” on a first come‑first served basis so that only as many people could bid as there were meals! Soooo, some fellers left…. musta gone home to eat….but then came back for the foot stompin’ dancing! One good thing….the prices (for the most part) were kept lower this time and lots of us hope that is a trend ’cause lots of people wanted to come but just didn’t have the money. Well, the live band Bill Heid got from town was super great and Jack Miller again was the star of the evening teaching and calling dances…and even fiddling and playing the mandolin! The gym had a ‘lowered roof’ and everyone had a fine time! See you in May or June when it’s the. men’s turn????
…… So many people to thank this month for so much…it’s wonderful! The Civic Club and Fire Auxiliary deserve much praise for the thoughtfulness of calling everyone on the island to vote in the levy … you really got then out into the cold and that’s hard to do! Of course you’ve probably all heard of Mrs. Otto’s kind letter to us, She sent a check for $1000. and a letter asking that we do something in our school yard for the people and children of the island that would be a lasting memorial to Carl. Many are on the committee headed by Jackie Gaines and plans are being made. Our mothers have been providing a hot lunch once a week for the children and the kids swoon when Wednesdays roll around and those good smells start emanating from the kitchen. I hear the mothers think it’s pretty great once a week to get out of making sack lunches too! Lots of mothers have been coming by lately and doing work on the attic, files, Library etc. and the help is so appreciated it’s pitiful! Those misty eyed ladies you see are teachers who can find things when they look…. or at least they’ll be able to soon! Beth Moore has provided some beginning sketching classes for the children and together with Sally Hudson provides a ‘Fun Club’ once per week. The kids think that Wednesdays are ‘the best day of the week’. Puget Power gave us those clippings for our plantings. …the Terry Tyler’s gave us the book “Free To Be You and Me”…. The Pabors gave lots of boxes for projects … The Spillmans furnished sand after Ron and the kids finished the sand table….the Koneckes again gifted us with a subscription to the Christian Science Monitor newspaper…and Mr. Davis continues with his classes with the children on the history of Lummi. So there we are…..more people than we could ever remember to thank in person… Thank Goodness for this community newsletter!!!
P.S. to CHURCH BULLETIN Understand the first of the Bible study meetings, which was at Greeleys last night (Tuesday), proved to be tremendously interesting to the good crowd of islanders able to attend. Those who couldn’t make the first meeting but can be at Hudsons next Tuesday are promised a short review. From the reports sounds like a chance to be part of an exciting exploration.
