LUMMI ISLAND NEWSLETTER

JUNE 1968

NEXT GENERAL MEETING ‑ Wednesday evening, September 26.

Vacation time is here and needless to say, the traffic in some households is like Grand Central Station, maybe? At this time to our two high school graduates, Molly O’Rourke and Jim Miller, we say, “Congratulations, Good Luck, and God Speed!” Molly is due to leave Monday, June 24 with a group of students and counselors for Strasburg, France, on a study tour. Take special care, Molly, see and learn much and have fun.

One of the nicest days yet this summer was provided for our Annual Beach School Sports Day and Picnic. All the students participated and most won at least one ribbon. Having viewed these small fry in at least one sport, this layman reporter ventures to say, “Lummi Island will be well represented in the sport department of Ferndale in future years.

Before the end of the day’s festivities, the P.T.A. presented Mrs. Granger with a memory picture album, containing mementos of former students and school activities from as far back as 1957. Also to Mrs. Granger and her assistant, Mrs. Mary Hunsaker, a friendship cup and saucer. Mrs. Kathy Leedy, the teacher who is succeeding Mrs. Granger, attended too, and so informally met students and mothers.

Others who have been on short trips – Dale and Lynnette Granger; Frank and Gladys Granger, the Don Essex family along with the Charlie Morrisettes; arid most likely several others this writer does not know of.

Libba and Gus Johnson, Agnes and Leo Gilfilen will be leaving Friday, June 21, on the Prince George from Vancouver for an Alaskan cruise. “Happy Holidays” to one and all who are planning trips.

Jack and Lucille Miller accompanied by the Floyd Ademas have returned from an extended trip east, stopping at many points of interest to and from. More pictures, Pictures, Pictures, Jack?

By now this is passé’ news, but time is still opportune to extend a “Well done” to all those who participated in the success of Edith Granger’s retirement reception.

The bright red garbage receptacles placed by the Community Club are in evidence at strategic points around the Island again. Hope the visitors to our shores make good use of them.

The two recent money-making projects to swell the fund for a house for our new ambulance and later a Civic Building and sponsored by the Community Club have been well supported by Island residents and outsiders. The operation of the Outboarder Cafe on a Saturday and Sunday recently netted ____; and the more recent Sunday morning pancake breakfast‑_____. Grateful “Thanks” to the many hard workers. “And it is a lot of work.”

There is a little wider smile on George Brinhoff’s face these days. His wife, Callie, is slightly improved and the prospect of bringing her home is more encouraging. Floyd Massey has bounced back from a heart attack he suffered while on a trip to Iowa. Take care ‑ nice people.

June ‑‑‑ June‑‑‑‑June ‑‑‑ Ah So ‑‑‑ Weddings!

June 8 at the Anglican Church of the King in Burnaby, B.C. was the scene of the marriage of Steve Smith, son of John and May Corcoran and Diane Backus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Backus of Burnaby, D.C. Several Islanders attended and enjoyed the ceremony and reception which followed at the Stanley Park Pavilion in Vancouver, so much so it warranted getting a late, late ferry home. Congratulations Steve and Diane, much happiness in your first home in Bellingham!

We wish much happiness and good fortune to Johnny Curry and Barbara Andriff who slipped off kinda quiet like and exchanged wedding vows a week or so ago.

Speaking of weddings – congratulations are in order for two couples, at least, who have had recent wedding anniversaries: Wad and Clara celebrated a 25th anniversary at dinner in Johnson’s Fine Food Restaurant when they were honored by their family; Dick and Beth Hudson’s 28th year together has come and gone now, too.

Our servicemen still continue to make news. Rick Granger earned his “Spec 5~ rating recently in Augsburg, Germany. Warrant Officer Sid McFarland is recuperating nicely, leg healing wall, at Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma. Jim McDonald is due home soon and will be “Home Free” with his service commitment behind him. Bob McFarland is, in Virginia; Mike Ellingboe at Placu, Vietnam; and Mike Granger, Norman Boyes, Gary Roughton in Saigon, Vietnam; Dick Ecker at R.O.T.C. camp in Ft. Lewis for six weeks; Bud Granger on summer exercises and classes at the Submarine Base in New London, Connecticut and Air training in Pensacola, Florida. We think much of and about you fellas.

June 24th is a red letter day for Jim McDonald. He and Uncle Sam part company, at least as far as the military department goes. Whoopee!! huh Jim?

The usual June commuter diversion while the Whatcom Chief was on annual checkup in Seattle, was not on the old “Chief Kw1na” as in the past, but we read on the Island Mariner operated by Terry and Don Buzzard, out,of Bellingham. It was fun while it 1asted.‑‑‑‑but what steep climbs we had owing to the low, low, low tides.

There Is something lacking in this Issue??? “Well I guess” reports this month’s .substitute. There Is really no need to mention that it is the individual humor and wit with which our usual correspondent presents the Island news. Worry not!!! He is just on vacation a trip to Yellowstone National Park with his family.
